A George III silver gilt Vinaigrette, Cocks & Bettridge, Birmingham, 1802

The Vinaigrette is finely modelled as a drinking flask and is rectangular in form. This piece is beautifully engraved on the cover, and the base, with a central flower head surrounded by an outer border of foliate motifs. The sides are decorated with a band of prick dot designs on a linear engraved ground. The decoration is reminiscent of that of the great box makers, Phipps and Robinson, who were working in London at this date. The Vinaigrette has a hinged cover which opens to reveal the compartment where the sponge would have been placed and the cap unscrews to reveal the pierced grille. The base and the cover display a crisp full set of hallmarks.
