A rare silver mounted horn Vinaigrette. British and made circa 1845.

£1,350

This very rare Vinaigrette has a curved horn body.  The end is beautifully modelled to simulate a thistle, with a citrine set into it, to simulate a flower. The hinged cover is finely chased with thistles and is also inset with a larger facetted citrine. The cover opens up to reveal a hinged gilded grille engraved with pluming scrolls and a flower head. This piece has a  shield shaped cartouche applied to the horn body, engraved with contemporary initials, and it also displays its original chain.  The condition of this piece is excellent and its quality is exceptional. These vinaigrettes were made when all things Scottish became very fashionable after the State Visit of King George IV to Scotland and when Queen Victoria & Prince Albert purchased Balmoral, as their Scottish retreat.

Length: 2.75 inches, 6.88 cm.
