Both boxes are silver gilt and broad rectangular in form. The exterior of each box is beautifully, and profusely, engraved all over with feathery scrolls. The covers are inset with a large central white moon stone, surrounded by a band of turquoise. The Vinaigrette opens up to reveal a grille, pierced and engraved with scrolls around a central roundel. As you will appreciate, it is extremely rare to find a vinaigrette with identical snuff box. Both boxes are in excellent condition and are well marked in the cover, base and underside of the grille. In addition the covers are engraved with the retailers mark of Asprey, 166 Bond Street. Each has a Sovereign's crown above, denoting the retailers Royal appointment.
Jane Brownett was the widow of Abraham Brownett and continued the business after his death in 1867, from workshops in Dean Street, Soho. She registered marks in 1868 and 1884, therefore this represents an early example of her work, on her own. It would appear that Jane Brownett specialised in usual boxes of exceptional quality, however examples are very scarce.
