The box is broad rectangular in form and almost certainly has cast decoration. Most unusually, the cover and base display raised simulated filigree scroll work, with an unusual niello filled background. The cover and base displays a central oval cartouche, the cover of which is engraved with a set of contemporary initials. The sides are decorated with reeding and the interior displays fine interior gilding. The grille is unusually pierced and engraved with book and quill, surrounded by flower heads and foliate motifs. The Vinaigrette is in excellent condition and is very well marked inside, including a sterling mark and date letter on the underside of the grille. This is the first time we have ever seen this design.
