The Vinaigrette has serpentine shaped sides and the base is decorated with various designs of engine turning around a vacant cartouche. The sides are also decorated with engine turning and this example has a cast floral and foliate thumb piece. The cover is, however, beautifully engraved with a detailed view of the Crystal Palace, with raying sunburst above. The quality of the engraving is exceptional and these were made to commemorate the Great Exhibition in 1851. The interior displays fine original gilding and a grille pierced and engraved with feathery scrolls and flower heads. The box is very well marked and displays a makers mark and duty mark on the underside of the grille.
