The Nelson Vinaigrette is one of the most important, and desirable, Vinaigrettes to be found. The example we offer for sale is rectangular in form and the hinged cover is engraved with a very detailed portrait of the Admiral Lord Nelson in Naval uniform surrounded by an oval banner engraved with "ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERYMAN WILL DO HIS DUTY", all surrounded by a linear frame. The sides and base are engraved with prick dot bands and the base is centred with a raying floral motif. The interior displays fine gilding and a very rare die stamped grille pierced with a view of Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory, and the date of the Battle of Trafalgar, Oct 21 1805. The Vinaigrette is in quite exceptional condition. After Nelson's death there was a huge out pouring of grief for our national hero. A very small number of mementos were produced for the upper end of the navy and society to purchase and the "Nelson" Vinaigrette was one such example. The most sought after examples are the Vinaigrettes which were made in 1805, the same year as Trafalgar.
Very few of these boxes survive and they seldom appear on the market. They are recognised as one of the rarest vinaigrettes to have been produced and are contained in all of the major museum box collections.
