This exceptionally rare Vinaigrette comes from the Matthew Linwood Countryside series.  The Vinaigrette is of an unusually large size and is broad rectangular in form.  The cover displays a finely engraved seated man in period costume, eating his meal, with a flask by his side.  The dog loyally looks on, seated under a tree.  The scene is contained within a prick dot frame.  These bands are also engraved on the base, around an unusual eye shaped motif.  The interior displays a very unusual simulated filigree grille, with heart motif in the centre and a surrounding beaded frame.  Matthew Linwood was known for this unusual design of cast grille.  This is a very rare subject matter and is illustrated in "Investing in Silver" by Eric Delieb, page 113.  The Vinaigrette is in excellent condition and is very well marked.  The hallmarks also have an additional small mark which is that of the specific individual within Linwood's workshops who made this box and this is a very rare and desirable mark to see.  He must have been a very skilled box maker, to be given his own mark.  This is seldom seen on Vinaigrettes.  The man depicted on the cover, may have been a shepherd, as a shepherd's crook is seen on the grass.
