The label was made in London circa 1775 and has a curved, shaped rectangular, form. The border is beautifully shaped and is engraved with scrolls and feather edge designs. The face is engraved for PORT and the reverse is well marked with the maker's mark and sterling mark. The label has raised eyelets, to which the chain is attached, and the top comes up to a very defined central domed section.
This is the first time we have seen this label design which is also illustrated in "Hester Bateman" by David Shure on Plate XLI, bottom row middle figure. An extract from Shure's book is attached.
