The box we refer to is English, was made circa 1780, and has a navette shaped main body made of tortoiseshell. The hinged cover, however, is made of a solid silver sheet, the first time we have seen this design. The cover has a beautifully engraved bright cut herring bone border and decorated hinge. The thumb piece is also, most unusually, decorated with a stylised shell motif. The box is modelled in a very attractive design and is in quite excellent condition. As we have emphasised, this is the first time we have seen this design of tortoiseshell box, with a solid silver cover. Most have pique covers.
