This very beautiful dish has an oval form and deep bowl. The sides rise to a beaded rim, with two oval side handles. The very unusual high domed cover terminates in a turned fruitwood finial. The front of the cover is engraved with a contemporary Armorial within a shield shaped frame with crossed floral sprigs below and bluebell garlands tied with ribbons above. The base of the dish is also engraved with a contemporary Crest. Most unusually, the dish also has its original lamp stand and burner, also made by Fogelberg in 1776. The stand has four beaded scroll legs and the feet are modelled as raying shells. The oval central spirit burner has a pull off cover, with two wicks, and can be removed from the frame. Both the burner body and cover are engraved with a contemporary Crest. The top rim of the stand is also engraved with the same Crest. The stand and dish are in most excellent condition and the base and cover of the dish, as well as the stand and base of the burner, display a very crisp, full, set of hallmarks. The cover of the burner is marked with the maker's mark and sterling mark. This is an exceptionally well marked example in quite excellent condition. This is no surprise when one considers the maker, Andrew Fogelberg, who was a silversmith of great reputation in terms of design and production. He was, after all, Master of the greatest British Silversmith of all time, Paul Storr.
The Arms are those of the ancient and prominent Yorkshire family of Tempest. They all descended from the Bracewell, County York, branch during the reign of Henry I. To find this type of dish, with its original burner, is very rare and this piece lends itself to serving a large number of foods, as well as being a beautiful display piece.
