A very rare and unusual Kitchen Nutmeg Grater made in London in 1819 by Charles Rawlings.

This piece has a semi-circular form, with a gadrooned border, and an arched handle for hanging up, which is unusually decorated with a Rococo raying shell, flanked by acanthus foliage. This design is especially unusual in the extensive arched floral and foliate decoration which flanks the steel grater. The hinged bottom opens to reveal the space where the nutmegs would have been kept and the steel grater is pierced with circular bands of roundels. This piece is very well marked and in exceptional condition. The back is also engraved with a contemporary inscription, this being the initials "SP" flanked by a crossed branch cartouche. This is all above "A token of Esteem from A.J. Myles". This is the first time we have offered this design however examples are shown in the catalogue of the Robert & Meredith Green Collection of Silver Nutmeg Graters and on page 68 of the new publication, "Nutmeg Graters, Pomanders and Spice Boxes" by Dr John Reckless.
