The Rattle has a baluster shaped shaft, with very unusual elongated mouthpiece with unusual pronounced girdle and raised oval cartouche engraved with a set of contemporary script initials.  The mouth piece section is engraved with bands of trailing foliate motifs and has a suspensory loop attached to the back.  This piece has two rows of marked bells and the main body is engraved with wriggle linear designs and the bottom section with foliate designs, almost like seaweed.  The original coral is attached to the scalloped section.  This piece is in excellent condition and is marked with the Maker's mark MT on the mouthpiece and with the King's Head Duty Mark, Sterling mark and "D" date letter on the scalloped section.

This is the first time we have seen anything by this rare Lady maker, who was the widow of William Turton.  He was a rattle maker and may well be represented in the Ruder Collection.  Her mark was entered on 10th October 1798 and she had workshops at 31, Monkswell Street.  She was obviously continuing the business after the death of her husband.

Length: 6.35 inches, 15.88 cm
