A very unusual George III Coffee Jug made in London in 1773 by Charles Wright.

The Jug stands on a circular domed spreading foot which is chased with floral garlands. The main body is also chased with the same design, bolder and more pronounced, and the garlands are tied with ribbons and tassels. The cast sparrow beak spout is decorated with foliate motifs and flower heads. The hinged, domed, cover terminates in a pyramid form finial, has a gadrooned rim, and is chased with the same designs, as seen on the foot and the main body. This piece has its original wicker "S" scroll handle which is attached at the base with a most beautiful cast lyre moulding. The main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with Crest and motto below, all surrounded by a crossed branch cartouche. This piece displays most unusual designs in the chasing and is in quite excellent condition. The Jug is fully marked in the foot and with the maker's mark and sterling mark on the cover. The Arms are those of French impaling Denton, for Fleming French of Ripple Vale, County Kent, and his first wide Sarah Denton. By this marriage he had an only son, John Denton Pinkstone French, who was great grandfather of Field Marshall Sir John Denton Pinkstone French, created 1922, 1st Earl of Ypres. The Earldom became extinct in 1970. The French family were a branch of the ancient Irish family of this name, still represented in the Peerage today.
