The Trays stand on four shell and scroll feet. The main bodies have a shaped rectangular form, with raised rim decorated Rococo scroll work, floral sprays and gadrooning. The flying scroll handles have a central ribbed section and are decorated with ribbing. The centre of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounding by a pluming scroll cartouche and the motto “ Justitie Sorer Fides” below.
The Trays are in excellent condition, are of a very good weight and are fully marked on the base. William Elliot was a quite exceptional silversmith who supplied the Royal Retailer Thomas Hamlet and worked in the circle of Paul Storr.
The arms are those of Thurlow impaling Lyon for the Reverend Thomas Thurlow who married Maria Lyon in 1811. The Reverend Thomas Thurlow (1788-1864), son of the Bishop of Durham, married Maria Francis Lyon, daughter of Thomas Lyon MP (3rd son of the 8th Earl of Strathmore). The Reverend Thomas matriculated at St, John's, Cambridge in 1807, graduated with his BA in 1811 and claimed his MA in 1816. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1812 and as a Priest in 1814. From 1812-1816 Thurlow was Curate of Wolverton in Buckinghamshire and Rector of Boxford from 1816 to 1839. In 1829, on the death of his brother, he succeeded to the post of following places-clerk of the Hanaper, Patentee of bankrupts and Prothnotary of the Court of Common Pleas at Durham. These posts were abolished by the Bankruptcy Acts of 1831 but Thomas received a life annuity of £11,734 2s 5d. Thomas lived at Baynard's Park in Horsham.
