An exceptionally fine & rare George III Fourteen sided Tea Caddy made in London in 1789 by James Young

This wonderful Tea Caddy is modelled in a very rare fourteen sided form. Both the top and base, of the sides, are engraved with a beautiful horizontal band of foliate scrolls and raying oval medallions on a scratch engraved gound. Each side panel is engraved with a prick dot frame. The flat, hinged, cover is engraved with an identical band, as is seen on the cover and terminates in a beautiful bright cut Neo-Classical urn finial. The Tea Caddy is fully marked on the base and with the sterling mark on the underside of the cover. James Young is a scarce maker, however the quality of his work, especially his engraved decoration, is of a very high standard. He had workshops at 70, Little Britain when this piece was made. A.G. Grimwade states in "London Goldsmith's 1697-1837", that his work is of elegant Neo-Classical design and fine finish, especially his epergnes.
