The Coasters have deeper than usual sides and display a beaded rim and stepped, reeded, base. Each is circular in form and the sides are pierced with an upper and lower horizontal band of raying flower heads. The central section also displays flower heads in roundels and engraved herring bone garlands. The Coasters are modelled in one of the most beautiful Classical designs which we have seen over the years. Both are well marked and are in excellent condition, displaying their original fruitwood turned bases.
William Plummer was a specialist pierced worker and made some of the most attractive, and finest, Classical wine coasters at this date. William Plummer was apprentice to another exceptional pierced worker, this being Edward Aldridge. He had workshops at 47, Gutter Lane when these Coasters were made. He must have had a reasonably sized establishment since piercing is of necessity a slow process and from their survival rate his output of such pieces was high.
