This very rare silver gilt pepper caster stands on a circular pedestal foot decorated with a frieze of entwined linear bands. The main body, unusually, is decorated with engine turned engraving, enclosed by the same entwined bands, as seen on the foot. The pull-off cover, has a domed central section pierced with vertical pails and roundels. The pepper is in excellent condition and is of the quality of design and production which the John Emes workshop was famous for. The Caster is fully marked in the foot and with the sterling mark and date letter on the cover. It is rare to find one of these pepper casters, which are nearly always made by Emes. It is also a very early date to find engine turning being used, as a form of decoration, on a piece of silver. A.G. Grimwade in his work, "London Goldsmiths 1697-1837" emphasises that, "his work shows a taste for elegant design and fine finish." This is certainly seen with this caster.
