This very fine silver gilt Vinaigrette is one of finest which could be found from the workshops of Nathaniel Mills, who is generally considered to be the finest box maker who ever worked in Birmingham. The box is broad rectangular in form, with bombe sides chased with flowers and folaite motifs. The base is engraved with crisp engine turned designs around a plain band. The cover displays a very crisp raised, shaped, frame decorated with scrolls, flower heads and foliate motifs. The centre of the cover has a raised gold cartouche surrounded by engine turned engraving. The interior is finely gilded and displays a grille pierced and engraved with pluming scrolls and flower heads. The box is in excellent condition and is very well marked, including a crisp maker's mark. Bombe Vinaigrettes, by Mills, very seldom appear on the market today.
Length: 1.75 inches, 4.38cm.
