The Strainer has a very unusual wide oval bowl with raised rim decorated with reeding. The side loop handle is also decorated with a reeded band. This piece is engraved on the reverse with a contemporary Crest and has a side clip to attach it to the side of a punch bowl. The bowl is beautifully pierced with entwined bands, roundels and a central section intended to simulate a flower head. The reverse is very well marked and this rare piece is in excellent condition. Fruit Strainers were used to strain lemon and fruit into punch bowls and other drinks. This is the first time we have seen one of this design, with a wide oval bowl pierced in this fashion. Examples are rare from the Bateman workshops and are not illustrated in the Hester Bateman book by David Shure.
