The box is broad rectangular in form with a stepped cover and base. The base is finely engraved with scroll work panels on a scratch engraved ground and the cover with a running hare in an oval, surrounded by scale work designs. The hare appears to be running through water with stylised ferns around him. This is possibly a design by Thomas Bewick, who was known for his hare designs on vinaigrettes and boxes, however examples seldom appear on the market. This box has a top and second bottom opening for a second type of snuff. The interior displays original gilding and all sections are very well marked. The sides are engraved with various prick dot bands. The work of Thropp and Taylor is rare and is always of the finest quality in terms of both design and production.
