DUBLIN. A very fine George III Snuff Box made in Dublin in 1799 by James Keating.

£1,650

The Snuff Box is modelled in a typical Irish elliptical form, with a plain base and sides.  The cover is beautifully engraved with an eclectic mix of prick dot, bright cut and wriggle work bands.  The central navette, bright cut, cartouche contains an unusual contemporary Crest, with the script initials RW below.  The box is in quite excellent condition and is very well marked in no fewer than three separate places.  The interior also displays very fine, original, deep gilding.

The crest is that of Waller (matching the initials RW)- the Waller family use this crest because Sir Richard Waller captured the French General Charles, Duke of Orleans (whose arms feature in the crest) at Agincourt.  There are a number of branches that use this crest officially but the only Irish one is that at Castletown, co. Limerick.  There was a Robert Waller (1735-1809) who lived at Allenstown, co. Meath and appeared in legal documents in 1789.  He died in 1809 and the estates were inherited by his nephew Mungo Henry Noble, later Waller, (d. 1831).

The house was built in 1750 but the estate was purchased  by the Irish Land Commission in the late 1930s and sadly the house was demolished in 1938.
