The sides are decorated with engine turning, as is the base, around a rectangular vacant cartouche.  Both the base and cover display a raised, chased, foliate scroll frame.  The cover displays a very unusual harbour scene in relief, probably a capriccio of a Mediterranean port with a church and castle to one side and a lighthouse to the other.  The scene also portrays a fully rigged British Frigate and a fishing boat at sea and two sailors on the shore with packages and an anchor. The box has an originally gilded interior and is engraved with the contemporary inscription:

"Presented to

JOHN MORRIS ESQ re

as a tribute of Esteem & Respect

by his grateful & obliged friend

F.G. FRANCIS

May 8th 1834."

The box is in quite exceptional condition and shows hardly any signs of wear to the decoration.  Both the inside of the cover and the base bear very crisp hallmarks.  This piece is almost certainly inspired by Dutch Capriccio Maritime painting which was popular from the Dutch Golden Age of Painting in the 17th century.  The quality of design and production is exceptional, which is what would be expected from the workshops of Taylor & Perry.
