HESTER BATEMAN. A very unusual George III Cream Basket made in London in 1789 by Hester Bateman.

Sold

The Basket is modelled in a smaller size and would have been used for cream.  This pretty piece stands on an oval pedestal foot which is decorated with reeding and prick dot designs.  The slightly everted rim is also decorated with reeding, as is the arched swing handle.  The main body is pierced with an upper band of trailing scrolls and flower heads, in addition to flower heads in roundels.  The sides are also engraved with floral garlands and prick dot scrolls, as well as a vacant circular cartouche.  The basket has a blue glass liner, with star cut base and a reeded, arched, handle.  This piece is also in excellent condition and is very well marked in the foot.  This would have been one of the last pieces to be made bearing her mark, as Hester Bateman was to retire in 1790.

Height to the top of the handle: 6 inches, 15 cm.
