HESTER BATEMAN. A very rare George III Tea Vase & Cover made in London in 1780 by Hester Bateman.

The Tea Vase stands on a square platform base with circular foot decorated with reeding and rising to a beaded band.  The vase shaped Classical main body is decorated with a double beaded band at the top and displays a palely gilded interior.  The high domed "pull-off" cover rises to a circular bright cut platform and terminates in a Classical urn finial, echoing the design of the vase.  The underside of the cover is also gilded.  The vase is in excellent condition and is fully marked in the foot and with the sterling mark on the underside of the cover.

Tea vases are very rare by Hester Bateman and would have been part of the tea equipage.  The very expensive tea would have been kept in these containers upstairs in the drawing room away from the servants, below stairs.
