The Basket is modelled in one of the rarest pierced designs by Hester Bateman which, because of its scarcity, is shown on page 65 of "Women Silversmiths 1685-1845 - Works in the Collection of The National Museum of Women in the Arts." and the extract is shown. The basket stands on a circular foot, with beaded edge, which is pierced with stylised flower heads in roundels, as well as bands of vitruvian scrolls. The foot rises to a Neo Classical vase shaped body, with arched beaded handle and rim. The sides are again pierced with vitruvian scrolls and flower heads in roundels, as well as horizontal pails. The upper section is also engraved with bluebell garlands and raying flower heads, all of which has been executed to the highest standard. The basket is also engraved with a circular cartouche, containing contemporary script initials. The basket has a blue glass liner and is fully marked on the curved section of the lower section of the main body.
Height to the rim: 5.5 inches, 13.75 cm.
