HESTER BATEMAN. A beautiful George III Sugar Basket made in London in 1780 by Hester Bateman.

The Basket stands on a circular domed foot, with a beaded edge, which is pierced with vitruvian scrolls and displays an engraved bluebell band. The foot rises to a Neo Classical vase shaped body, with arched reeded handle and beaded rim. The sides are again pierced with vitruvian scrolls, flower heads in roundels, as well as horizontal pails. The upper section is also engraved with bluebell garlands and raying flower heads, all of which has been executed to the highest standard. The front is also engraved with a circular cartouche containing a contemporary Scottish Crest with the Motto "Macte Virtute Esto - Go on and Prosper". This was the Crest and Motto as used by the Dixon and Lowndes families. The basket has a blue glass liner and is fully marked on the curved section of the lower section of the main body. The basket is in quite excellent condition and is a rare design from the Bateman workshops.

Height, to the top of the handle: 9 inches, 22.5 cm.
Diameter at the rim: 4.5 inches, 11.25 cm.
