The Goblets each stand on a circular foot, with baluster shaped stem decorated with reeding. The foot rises to a plain vase shaped body, with everted rim. The interior of each bowl is gilded to protect the silver and is always a sign of quality of production. Unusually, the feet unscrew from the main body, so that they can be easily packed away for travelling. The foot and stem are each engraved with a number, so that the user is sure that the right foot is being attached to the correct bowl. Both the side of the bowl and the underside of the foot display crisp clear hallmarks.
Due to the size of each Goblet, we feel that they must have been for spirits, rather than wine, which makes them extremely rare and they may well have been a special commission. John Reily had workshops at 6, Carey Lane when these fine pieces were made.
