The box is modelled in an unusual wide oval form, giving the impression of a provincially made piece. The sides and cover are beautifully engraved with bright cut herring bone bands, which finely conceal the hinge. The centre of the cover is engraved with an oval cartouche with the contemporary inscription, "George Duffus to JC", with a stylised floral motif below. The box is in excellent condition, with a finely gilded interior, and is well marked on the base with IL ABD, for John Leslie and Aberdeen. Snuff Boxes from Scotland are rare, however provincially made examples from the 18th century are extremely scarce. This is only the second from Aberdeen we have handled over all of our dealing years and very few are known.
