The Candlesticks have an unusual shallow form with circular bases and everted rim decorated with reeding.  The very unusual domed central section is decorated with bat wing fluting and rises to a baluster shaped shaft and tulip shaped socket.  The pull off nozzle has a reeded rim and both the underside of the base and the nozzle, display a full set of hallmarks.  Each is in quite excellent condition.  Desk Candlesticks are extremely rare and very few were made during the Eighteenth Century, this being only the second pair we have offered.  They provided a low flame so that documents could be easily read at the desk and provide the light to see when writing.  John Troby was fine silversmith, whose work is not often found.  He often produces pieces of innovative design.  He had workshops in Ship Court, Old Bailey, when these unusual pieces were made.

Base Diameter: 5.45 inches, 13.63 cm.

Height: 4.25 inches, 10.63 cm.

Weight: 16oz, the pair.
