A very rare George III Octagonal Table Bowl made in Edinburgh in 1806 by Patrick Cunningham & Son

Bowls of this octagonal form, from Scotland, are extremely rare. This example stands on an eight sided stepped pedestal foot which is decorated with gadrooning. The deep, gilded, bowl rises to an everted rim, also decorated with the same gadrooning as is seen on the foot. The front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary shield shaped Armorial, with Crest and Motto above, engraved in the Scottish manner. The Arms display a crossed branch cartouche below and a set of contemporary script initials is shown on the reverse, below the hallmarks. This piece is in excellent condition and is of a good gauge and weight. The Arms are those of the Ramsay family quartering Congalton. Alexander Ramsay married Mary Congalton in Edinburgh on 27th October, 1806, so this may well have been a wedding present. This piece lends itself to a variety of uses on the dining table, as well as being a decorative item when not in use.
