A very rare George III Cube Box made almost certainly in London circa 1787.

Sold

The box is unusually cast and the hinged cover and base are inset with a silver sixpence dated 1787 showing the profile portrait of King George III.  The four sides each show the back of the sixpence, dated 1787.  The coins are surrounded by a circular Classical laurel and berry frame and are mounted on a matted ground, with raying flower heads in each corner, including the Rose of England.  The box is in exceptional condition and of a quite wonderful weight.  This piece was formerly in the famous "Lion Collection" of Boxes and is illustrated on page 174 of the catalogue of the collection.
