The main body is of typical tapering form and is decorated with reeded bands. The cast handle, however, is very unusually modelled as a young Bacchus, standing on a plinth, with one arm on his head and the other by his side. His body and hair is covered with trailing vine leaves. Bacchus was the God of wine and is often pictured in Classical painting, however this is the first time we have seen him on a table bell. The bell is in quite excellent condition and is fully marked inside the bowl and on the interior clapper. William Cattell was a very fine quality silversmith, based near the Swan in Hoxton, London, from 1773.
