A very fine set of twelve George III Tablespoons made in Edinburgh in 1791 by Alexander Gardiner.

£1,950

The Spoons, six shown, are modelled in the Old English pattern with slightly rounded ends to the tops of the stems.  Each is beautifully engraved with a contemporary Crest with the unusual Motto “ Decerptae dabunt odorem – Roses plucked will give sweet smell” engraved above in the Scottish manner.  The Crest and Motto are those of Aytoun as officially borne by Aytoun of Kinaldie, but also by Sir Joseph Aytoun of Kippo, Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod in the reign of Charles II.

The Spoons are in excellent condition, are of a good gauge and have good marks, including the alternative Town Mark used at this date.  They also possess good tips to the ends of the bowls.  These were formerly in the personal collection of our founder, Mary Cooke.

Length: 8.5 inches, 21.25 cm.

Weight: 28oz, the set.
