The Butter Shells each stand on three winkle shell feet and the main body is modelled as a wide raying scallop shell.  The carrying handle is decorated with gadrooning and is also engraved with a contemporary family Crest.  The shells are of a good size and are fully marked on the reverse.  They are both in excellent condition and are of the finest quality.  In our opinion, Emes & Barnard were some of the finest shell makers during this period.  The Crest is that as used by the Rhan family of Bremen and Enfield.
