A George III Chamberstick made in London in 1786 by John Schofield

The Chamberstick has a circular base with raised rim decorated with a band of applied beading. The base has a slightly domed centre where it rises to the central stem which is also decorated with beading, as is the tulip shaped socket, pull off nozzle and conical extinguisher. The base is engraved with a contemporary Crest, above a garter, engraved with the Motto Steady and the initials WV, in script lettering. The Crest in heraldic terms is a rudder with a handle proper and is that as used by the Vereist family of Aston Hall near Rotherham, specifically for William Fraser Vereist. The famous architect, John Carr of York, was employed to re-model and re-build Aston Hall in the fashionable Palladian style in 1775 and a photograph is attached. The Chamberstick is well marked on the base, nozzle and extinguisher. John Schofield enjoyed the patronage of both George III and the Prince of Wales, later George IV.
