An extremely rare William & Mary Combination Apple Corer and Spice Caster made in London circa 1690, Maker's Mark of DA in a shaped Punch.

The piece we refer to is an exceptionally rare William & Mary Apple Corer and Spice Caster which was made in London circa 1690 and which is marked with the maker's mark of DA in a shaped punch, shown in "Jackson's Silver and Gold Marks" on page 144. As you will see from the images, the blade of the corer is finely shaped and is beautifully engraved with late seventeenth century designs including bands of arrow head motifs and a trailing tulip stem in full bloom. The globular end is pierced with plain roundels and unscrews so that the end could be loaded up with spice such as nutmeg and cinnamon. This piece is in quite excellent condition.
Very few of these pieces survive and they seldom appear on the market, as only a few were produced in the first place and only for a very short period of time. This is one of the earliest examples known. There are also very few illustrations seen in books, however they are discussed and three known examples are illustrated in "Nutmeg Graters, Pomanders and Spice Boxes" by Dr John Reckless.
