An extremely fine George II Tankard & Cover made in London in 1733 by John Fossey.

This very fine Tankard stands on a spreading applied foot decorated with reeding. The slightly tapering main body displays an applied horizontal girdle on the lower section and the rim displays an everted reeded moulding. The domed, hinged, cover is also engraved with thread designs and displays a flared outer edge. The scroll handle displays a heart shaped moulding at the base and shaped applied decoration, at the top, with a pendant drop beneath. This piece has a cast corkscrew thumbpiece and the front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a foliate scroll, trellis work and strap work cartouche, with a Rococo raying shell above. The Arms are those of the Hyde family of County Nottingham. This piece is in quite excellent condition and is of a very good weight and colour. The side of the main body displays a full set of hallmarks, as does the inside of the cover. John Fossey was apprenticed to Thomas Tearle. His first mark was entered in 1733, therefore this represents an early example of his work which was made in workshops in Gutter Lane, London.
