The Candlesticks are modelled in the early 18th century octagonal style with a stepped base and a beautiful baluster shaft.  The shaft is octagonal in form all the way up to the top socket.  The base is engraved with a lozenge shaped armorial, these being the arms of a Lady of the Dene family.  They impale those of the Barret family.  The Armorial is surrounded by a cartouche of foliate scroll and strapwork, typical of the early 18th century.  The candlesticks are in exceptional condition and have a lovely colour.  They are fully marked in the foot and with the sterling mark on the socket.  Thomas Merry was apprenticed to Henry Grant and then John Laughton, where he had taken over his old master's business by 1704.  He had workshops in Anchor Court, Little Old Bailey, when these Candlesticks were made.  He was a specialist candlestick maker, as was his master, of very fine quality and reputation.

Height: 7 inches.

Base Diameter: 4.5 inches.

Weight: 26oz, the pair.
