The box is circular in form with a plain tortoiseshell base. The tortoiseshell pull-off cover has a beautiful silver rim decorated with stylised engraved foliate motifs, and arrow head motifs. The centre displays a double profile portrait of Queen Mary II & King William III of Great Britain. The King and Queen are dressed as a Roman Emperor and Empress. This portrait is identical to that as used on the "Church" medal which was issued to commemorate the restoration of the Church of England under William & Mary. As you will appreciate, they were installed as monarchs after the forced abdication of the Catholic James II. The box, and silver mounts, are in excellent condition. This is a rare survivor from the short reign of William & Mary, as Mary was to die in December 1694 and William went on to reign alone until his death in 1702.
Height: 0.7 inches, 1.75 cm.
