A George II Cast Mote Spoon made in London circa 1740.

This rare George II mid 18th century cast silver Mote Spoon is of a unusual small size and made in the Rococo style, the plain tapering handle with diamond point finial. It was almost certainly made in London circa 1740. The leaf or acorn shaped bowl is pierced with scrolling foliate stems and is decorated with shell details and scrolls. This piece is in quite excellent condition and is unusual being cast, as most were pierced from thinner sheet silver and are not modelled in such a beautiful design. These examples were obviously made for the top end of the market. As you will appreciate, the stems of the mote spoon are marked and then shaped afterwards, so very seldom are you able to read the marks, however you can clearly see the back legs of the lion sterling mark and part of the letter "B" in the maker's mark.
Length: 4.3 inches, 10.75 cm.
Width, across the bowl: 0.75 inches, 1.88 cm
