A rare William III Fully Marked Britannia Standard Patch Box made in London in 1697 by Richard Syng.

£1,550

The Box is circular in form and has a deep base, which is plain in design.  The pull-off cover is engraved with a central raying flower head, surrounded by a trailing foliate swirl.  This piece was almost certainly used to carry patches, however this is very desirable as it contains a full set of hallmarks in the base and the underside of the cover is marked with the maker’s mark and leopard’s head erased.  Usually such pieces, from this date, only bear a maker’s mark.

Richard Syng, was apprenticed to Abraham Hinde.  His first mark was entered in April 1697, so this represents an early example of his work.  He had workshops in Carey Lane, when this box was made.

Height: 0.7 inches, 1.75 cm.

Diameter: 1.1 inches, 2.75 cm.
