The Tumbler Cup is of typical form and displays original hammer marks on the interior, where it is raised. The front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with Crest above, all surrounded by a naive floral and foliate cartouche, typical of the designs of this period. This engraving is some of the finest we have seen on a Tumbler Cup of this period. The Tumbler is fully marked on the base and has a good colour. Matthew Lofthouse was a fine maker and his mark was first registered in 1705, therefore this represents an early example of his work. He was the brother of Seth Lofthouse, another prolific silversmith, at this date. Tumbler Cups from the Seventeenth and early Eighteenth centuries are scarce, therefore this represents a desirable early example.
