HESTER BATEMAN. A rare George III Drum Mustard Pot made in London in 1783 by Hester Bateman.

The Mustard Pot is modelled in the Drum form, which is unusual from the Bateman workshops. The main body displays a band of applied beading on the rim and at the base. The sides are also decorated with an upper and lower pierced band of roundels, crescent moon motifs and horizontal bands, in addition to flower heads in roundels. The sides are also engraved with wavy herring bone and prick dot garlands and the hinged cover is engraved with an outer prick dot band. The scroll handle is attached to the cover with a pierced fan shaped thumb piece. The Mustard has a blue glass liner, is fully marked on the base and with the makers mark and sterling mark on the cover. Many of Hester Batemans Mustard Pots were oval in form and to find a drum example is unusual, especially of this size and pierced with these designs.
