The box is cast and rectangular in form. The sides, base and cover are decorated with crisp engine turned engraving and also display a cast outer border of foliate motifs and flower heads. The centre of the cover displays a raised rectangular panel of a horse racing scene first past the post, a very rare and desirable subject matter. The interior gilding is exceptional and is engraved with the number 174, which was most probably an inventory number for a large collection. John Linnit was an exceptional maker, known for his Pedlar Boxes, who had workshops at 9 Craven Buildings, Drury Lane, when this piece was made.
