A very fine & rare George III "Urn" Nutmeg Grater made in London in 1789 by William Key.

Sold

The Nutmeg Grater stands on a square pedestal foot which rises to an urn shaped main body decorated with beautiful floral garlands and an upper freize of prick dot bands and stylised foliate motifs.  The front displays a vacant bright cut navette shaped cartouche.  The domed hinged cover is also decorated with a bright cut band and terminates in a ball finial.  This piece is in excellent, crisp, condition and opens up to reveal the steel grater.  The box is very well marked on all silver sections.  Due to the rarity of this design, a similar grater is illustrated on the front cover of the catalogue of the important Robert & Meredith Green Collection of Silver Nutmeg Graters.   William Key entered his first mark in on 1st December 1783 and had workshops at 64, Barbican when this piece was made.
