YORK. An extremely rare George III Tea Caddy made in York in 1782 by Hampston & Prince.

The Caddy is oval in form and the sides and cover are engraved with horizontal twisted ropework bands. The main body is engraved, to the highest standard, with Neo-Classical drapery swags, tied with medallions. This form of decoration is peculiar to York, in its true form. The front of the main body also displays an oval laurel leaf cartouche, containing a contemporary Crest. The top displays a very finely cast finial, modelled as a sprig from a tea plant. This piece is fully marked on the base and with the Sterling mark on the cover. Tea Caddys from York are extremely rare and this specific example was exhibited at the 2000 York Silver exhibition at Fairfax House in York.
