The Dish is of a large size with a shaped oval form, decorated with a gadrooned band. The rim is cast and is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with Motto below and the Coronet of a Duke above. This is flanked by pelican supporters either side. The dish is in excellent condition, is of an exceptional weight, and is very well marked on the reverse. This piece is also engraved with its original scratch weight of an outstanding 60oz. The Armorial is that as used by James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose (1755-1836).
James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose (1755-1836), was invested with the Order of the Garter in 1812. His seat seems to be Buchanan Auld House (burnt down in 1852). The 3rd Duke had an interesting career: an MP for Richmond 180-1784 and Great Bedwyn 1784-1790 (when he inherited the Dukedom and moved to the Lords). He was also Vice President of the Board of Trade (1789-1790), co-paymaster of the forces (1789-1791), Master of the Horse (1790-1795), Lord Justice General (1795-1836), President of the Board of Trade (1804-1806), Master of the Horse (1807-1821), Lord Chamberlain (1821-1827 and 1828-1830). He was also Chancellor of the University of Glasgow (1781-1836) and Lord Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire (1790-1793), Stirlingshire (1794-1836) and Dunbartonshire (1813-1836).
