The Soup plates are of a circular form with deep bowls, which rise to a shaped gadrooned rim interspersed with acanthus leaves and tear drop motifs. The plates are each engraved, on the border, with a contemporary Crest. Each is in excellent condition, with a crisp set of marks, and pattern number on the reverse. The quality and weight is of the usual high standard to be expected from Storr.
The Crest is that of Manners beneath a Baron's coronet for Thomas Manners-Sutton, 1st Baron Manners (1756-1842). Thomas Manners-Sutton was the sixth son of Lord George Manners-Sutton and grandson of the third Duke of Rutland. He was educated at Charterhouse School and Emmanuel College Cambridge (he matriculated in 1773, graduated with his B.A. as 5th Wrangler in 1777 and claimed his M.A. in 1780). He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1775 and called to the Bar in 1780. Thomas served as MP for Newark from 1796 to 1805. He was Solicitor General to the Prince of Wales from 1800 to 1802 and Solicitor General from 1802 to 1805. From 1805 to 1807 Thomas was made a Baron of the Exchequer and in 1807 he was made a Privy Councillor and created Baron Manners. He served as Lord Chancellor of Ireland from 1807 to 1827.
Lord Manners married twice- firstly, in 1803, to Anne Copley, daughter of Sir Joseph Copley 1st Baronet (with whom he had no children) and secondly to the Hon. Jane Butler, daughter of the 9th Baron Cahir and sister of the 1st Earl of Glengall. Baron Manners lived at Upper Brook Street, the Grove, Suffolk and Foston, Lincolnshire and an engraving of him is shown in the image stream.
