The Coasters are modelled in the large magnum size and are circular in form. The sides are decorated with a wide band of anthemion motifs, with scrolls below, framed by raised plain girdles. The sides rise to an everted rim decorated with bold gadrooning interspersed with raying shells, flanked by oak leaves and acorns. Both have turned boxwood bases, centred by a silver boss engraved with a contemporary Crest. The Coasters are in excellent condition and are fully marked on the edge of the base and with the sterling mark on the silver boss. Wine Coasters are not common by John Bridge, especially modelled in the Magnum size. The maker’s mark of John Bridge is surmounted by a crown, emphasising his Royal status.
The Crest is that of Sir Archibald Campbell, 1st Baronet, GCB (12 March 1769 – 6 October 1843). He was a British army officer. From 1824 to 1826, Gen. Campbell commanded the British forces in the First Anglo-Burmese War, the longest and most expensive war in British Indian history, that gave the British control of Assam, Manipur, Cachar, Jaintia, Arakan and Tenasserim. He became known as the "Hero of Ava". From 1831 to 1837, he was the administrator of the colony of New Brunswick, Canada. The Canadian city of Campbellton in the province of New Brunswick was named in his honour. A portrait of Sir Archibald, by John Wood, is shown.
John Bridge was a partner in the Royal Goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, which was the largest and most successful silver retailer of the Regency period. They set the standard during the nineteenth century for both the organisation of the silver trade and its promotions of artistic designs. John Bridge was appointed Royal Goldsmith as early as 1797. A portrait is attached of the great man from the collection of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.
