HESTER BATEMAN. A very fine George III Sugar Basket made in London in 1784 by Hester Bateman,

Sold

This very fine Basket would have formed part of the Bateman Teaset and stands on an oval, stepped, pedestal foot decorated with an applied beaded band and engraved band of prick dot designs.  The "Boat" shaped main body has a beaded rim and arched handle and is also pierced with bands of vitruvian scrolls, as well as vertical pails and stylised flower heads in ovals.  The sides are also engraved with wavy prick dot bands and floral garlands.  The front displays a navette shaped cartouche containing a contemporary Crest.  The basket has a blue glass liner and is very well marked in the foot including the rare incuse duty mark, where the King's Head is seen in a cut cornered punch.  This was only seen in 1784 and 1785.  The basket is of a good size and could also be used for chocolates on the dining table.  This is in quite excellent condition.
